As factory-sealed video games become increasingly sought after by collectors, resealed copies have become more common in the market. While no single feature can confirm whether a game is genuinely factory sealed, examining several key indicators together can help you make a more informed decision.
This guide covers some of the most common signs experienced collectors look for when assessing the authenticity of a factory-sealed game across PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo platforms. While many of these tips can be applied more broadly, this guide is primarily aimed at PAL region releases, as seal types, security labels and packaging details can vary between regions.

🔍 Y-Fold
The cellophane wrapper on genuine factory-sealed games is applied using automated machinery. Because of this, the folds at the top and bottom of the case are typically neat, tight and symmetrical.
These folds often form a distinctive "Y" shape (and in some cases resemble an "X"), making them one of the most recognised indicators of an authentic factory seal.
On resealed games, these folds may appear uneven, bulky, scrunched up or slightly melted due to manual heat sealing. While not definitive on their own, poor-quality folds should encourage a closer inspection.
🛡️ Security Seal / Tear-strip / Factory Seal Indicators
Many genuine physical games across Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo feature platform-specific security seals, tear-strips or branded stickers that indicate the game has not been opened.
If these security features are missing when they would normally be expected, it may indicate the game has been opened and resealed.
Where present, inspect them carefully. Genuine seals should sit flat, smooth and evenly applied, with no lifting, bubbling, wrinkles or adhesive residue.
Resealed copies often display signs of tampering such as lifted edges, repositioning marks, trapped dirt or disturbed adhesive.
📦 Cellophane Quality
Factory shrink wrap is typically thin, tightly fitted and has a crisp texture.
When gently handled, genuine wrap usually produces a distinctive crinkling sound due to the tension of the plastic.
Many resealed games use thicker commercial shrink wrap that feels softer, fits more loosely around the case and lacks the same tight finish.
🎮 Case Condition
Inspect the condition of the case beneath the seal. Genuine factory-sealed games typically show little to no handling wear.
Scratches, scuffed corners, fingerprints, worn edges or cracked cases underneath otherwise pristine shrink wrap may suggest the game has previously been opened before being resealed.
