PlayStation Tear Strip Guide

What is the PlayStation Tear Strip?

The tear strip is the branded or unbranded security seal running horizontally around official PlayStation game cases. It served two main purposes:

  • Tamper evidence – once broken, the game was clearly opened
  • Authenticity – helped retailers and buyers identify genuine, factory-sealed copies

Over time, the strip also became a visual identifier for PlayStation generations.

PS1 – The Original Tear Strip (1995–2000s)

Text: “PlayStation” logo
Cases: Jewel cases

This is the most iconic strip for early collectors. Almost all officially sealed PS1 games used it, excluding certain third-party publisher releases and bigger box variants.

PS2 – First Tear Strip with Console Version (2000–2009)

Text: “PlayStation 2” branding
Cases: DVD-style cases

The PS2 era standardized the tear strip across regions. Extremely consistent, making it useful for spotting reseals. Missing or incorrect strips are red flags in the PAL region.

PS3 – Two Distinct Tear Strip Designs

Early PS3 (2007–2009)
Text: “PLAYSTATION 3” (all caps)
Branding style: Matches the original “Spider-Man font” era

Later PS3 (2009–2018)
Text: “PS3” (new unified branding)
Reason: Sony rebranded PlayStation to a cleaner, consistent look

PS4 – Transition to the Modern Strip (2013–Present)

Early PS4: Strip with “PS4”
Later PS4: Strip with just “PlayStation”
Mirrors PS3 changes, moving to brand-first packaging.

PS5 – Modern Tear Strip (2020–Present)

Text: “PlayStation”
Design: Clean, minimal, consistent worldwide
Standardized for brand trust and retail security.

PSP – Compact Tear Strip (2004–2014)

Text: “PSP”
Cases: UMD plastic cases
Thinner due to smaller case size.

PS Vita – Clear Tear Strip Era

Colour: Clear / transparent
Text: None
Cases: Vita blue cases
Subtle but easier to fake; condition and provenance matter more.
